Top NJ High School Sports Teams to Watch

‘Tis the season for winter sports like basketball, hockey, wrestling and winter track. Love NJ high school sports teams as much as we do? We put together a cheat-sheet of the hardest to beat schools you can watch as they forge ahead in their prospective sports!

Tip: ‘Group’ sizes in NJ begin with the largest at level 4, and decrease in size for levels 3, 2, 1 and non-public schools.

    Basketball

Girls: Almost one month into the 2015-16 girls’ basketball season and 20 New Jersey sports teams still have undefeated titles. Here are our top five prospects for the season: Atlantic City, Belvidere, Camden Catholic, Cumberland and East Orange.

Boys: Boys’ basketball is also off to a strong start in New Jersey, with three NJ high school sports teams remaining undefeated, including Linden, Washington Township and Westfield.

    Winter Track

Girls: 2016 has brought some severe competition for girls winter track. A few teams to watch include Ridge, South Brunswick, Franklin and Lenape. In the 2015 season, South Brunswick and Franklin shared the Group 4 state relay title, and they’re both vying to keep it that way.

Boys: In Group 4, defending track and field champions East Orange will be tough to defeat in 2016. This team has two returning state champions: Cory Poole and Akeem Lindo. Other teams to watch include 2015 state Group 4 relay winner Old Bridge and 2015 Group 3 champion Kingsway, which moved up to Group 4 this season.

    Ice Hockey

Girls: Only one team remains undefeated in 2016: Morristown-Beard. Following close behind with just one loss is Lawrenceville, and finally with just two losses, Mater Dei.

Boys: Gloucester Catholic, Bergen Catholic and Bishop Eustace will all be playing in the Gordon Conference this season, which is widely known as the best league in New Jersey. It features several of the best squads around. These teams are the strongest teams in the state and definitely ones to watch!

    Wrestling

Boys: Those living in New Jersey have little doubt that Bergen Catholic is on its way to its third straight number one finish, making it one of the best NJ high school sports teams. First runner up is Delbarton, which includes the aspiring wrestling professional, sophomore Pat Glory, who won the title Beast of the East for the 113-pound weight class.
