Jersey City Recreation: Exploring Liberty State Park
9/14/2015 8:31:03 AMWondering what to do in Jersey City in the fall? As summer winds down and more comfortable temperatures settle in, it becomes the perfect time to get out for some Jersey City recreation and visit one of New Jersey’s many state parks! Liberty State Park is Jersey City’s own green oasis, situated in the middle of northern New Jersey and located just 20 minutes from Lower Manhattan. Visitors of this New Jersey park especially enjoy the views of the New York City skyline, the Statue of Liberty and the Verrazano Bridge.
The New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry opened Liberty State Park in 1976 to coincide with America’s bicentennial celebration, and what a way to celebrate! The 1,121-acre park in Jersey City consists of 46 acres of salt marsh, 26 acres of freshwater lands, 50 acres of grasslands and 100 acres of urban forest.
Whether it’s an evening walk, a morning jog or a Saturday bike ride, there’s countless ways to explore the natural beauty of Liberty State Park. If golf is your game, enjoy the par course that runs along Freedom Way. Looking for something more low-key? Bring along a pair of binoculars and view the numerous species of birds that frequent the Jersey City park. On a warm Saturday, take the kids to one of the various grassy areas and teach them how to fly a kite. With ample space for all sorts of activities, Liberty State Park provides an ideal place for Jersey City recreation and relaxation.
Days off from school are also a great time to take advantage of activities in NJ such as Statue Cruise’s to Ellis Island to visit the Statue of Liberty and buff up on American History. The ticketing and departure areas at Liberty State Park are located by the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal.
