New Jersey Devils Players Support Jersey City Animal Shelter

Three New Jersey Devils hockey superstars showed their support on April 19th at the Liberty Humane Society’s fundraiser in Jersey City.  Corey Schneider, Andy Green and Adam Henrique were all on site to greet fans, sign memorabilia and play with the animals in an attempt to draw potential pet adoptees.

Devils fans showed their true dedication by lining up as early as 9:30AM, even though the players weren’t scheduled to arrive until noon. Dan and Laura Bigos, a married couple from Hackensack, NJ, came to the fundraiser decked out in their Devils gear. While waiting in line to meet their favorite New Jersey Devils players, the couple immediately became attracted to Tinkerbell, a young bulldog, and it was love at first sight.

"As soon as we met Tinkerbell she would not stop licking Dan and she sat on my hip and wanted me to pet her to death so I knew definitely there was something about her," said Laura. Dan chimed in, "The Devils brought us here but we figured while we are here we might as well see if there is a dog for us."

Having the hockey stars present worked like a charm! The animal shelter, which is located on Jersey City Boulevard (just outside of Liberty State Park), was hoping for this kind of reaction.

Jessica Castellano, development manager at Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City said, "We are excited that the Devils are supporting this event. It is just an amazing testimony to the quality of the players and the team both on the ice and off."

More than 350 fans paid at least $20 each for the Devils players to autograph various items, which brought the fundraiser’s total to $8,300. In addition to the money raised, four pets were adopted and eight more applications were filled out during the event!

The Shelter currently houses 50 dogs and over 120 cats. For more information on adopting, call (201) 547-4147 or visit www.LibertyHumane.org.
