Mikail Prokorov is already famous. The spotlight tends to find you when you are the 39th richest man in the world. After a lifetime of financial success in Moscow, the Russian billionare has been approved by the NBA as the new owner of the New Jersey Nets. Prokorov grew up a basketball fan in a county usually known for its soccer and hockey passions, and eventually came to own Russia’s most successful professional basketball team. He has come to the Nets with tremendous goals and an infectious personality, not to mention boatloads of money.

Appearing on WFAN on Wendesday afternoon, Prokorov laid out the goal for his new team: win an NBA Title within five years. This statement was followed by Mikail laying out what success means for a team he owns, “First step, we win a championship….then a dynasty.” For New Jersey Nets fans and residents of New Jersey that watched the team scuffle through a 12-70 disaster last season, the goals are welcomed with open arms and skepticism.

Prokorov has his work cut out for him if his new endeavor is to work out the way he plans. First, there is the issue of improving the roster. After coming up short in the NBA Draft Lottery this week, the Nets have the third pick in June’s draft to take a future star. In addition, the team has roughly 26 million dollars in salary cap room to lure free agents, most notably LeBron James. Prokorov must hire a head coach, oversee construction on a new arena in Brooklyn, and ensure a smooth move for two years to the Prudential Center. Prokohov will succeed in growing the game globally and just might make the Nets a superpower along the way.
