Stokes, a junior, is a former standout at St. Benedicts Prep. He is a major contributor to Coach Jay Wright’s four guard lineup. He averaged over nine points per game during the regular season, and shot nearly forty percent from three point range. His ability to create off the dribble and shoot from long range is a match up nightmare for opponents.
Cheek, a freshman, was recruited out of St. Anthony High School in Jersey City to complement, and eventually replace, Stokes in the Wildcats lineup. He averaged over five points per game as a freshman in the Big East. To contribute at that type of level in the toughest conference in the nation is a testament to his future stardom.
Villanova made a run to the Final Four last year before losing to eventual champion North Carolina. They are back after being awarded the number two seed in the South region. The Wildcats will open up with a game against NEC Champion Robert Morris on Thursday afternoon. If they are to advance, they would take on the winner of the Richmond-St. Mary’s game for the right to go to the South regional finals in Houston.
If Villanova is to make a run to Indianapolis, their pair of guards from Jersey will have to play as well as we’ve become accustomed to their entire careers.
