The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation, with more arrests expected, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Jersey City Police Department.
The victim’s sister, Monique Burgess, said the family is thankful police arrested the shooter.
“It’s difficult that he’s not here with us, though,” she added. “But a week after we buried him, I found out I was pregnant. It’s a boy. I’m going to add ‘Darius’ as his middle name.”
Burgess said her mother, Miriam Melendez, attended the arraignment when Rose was seen via videolink from the Hudson County Jail in Kearny.
“She saw that he feels no sorrow, shows no emotion,” Burgess said. “We can’t forgive or forget.”
Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory said that cameras around the park and interviews with witnesses lead to solving the case. Gregory confirmed that Rose shot Burgess due to a disagreement he had with one of Burgess’ acquaintances.
But Burgess did not know Rose, Monique Burgess maintains.
“[Darius] never saw him, never talked to him. We never met him,” she added.
Rose served five months in a state prison on drug charges, in 2006, according to New Jersey Department of Corrections records.
He remains in Hudson County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
