The folks behind Wild Fusion, in the Grove Street area of Jersey City, are either extremely clever or are suffering from an identity crisis. Wild Fusion wants to be Japanese, Chinese, and Thai - all at the same time. A tall Buddha statue greets you as you pass through the dark inner curtain. The dining room walls are painted bright red, with glowing lanterns all around bathing you in a warm light, as if you are in a Hong Kong noodle shop. But surprisingly, it all works.
If you’re so inclined, you could start with miso soup, a Japanese staple, move on to a plate of General Tso’s Chicken, a classic Chinese dish, and then finish off your meal with a healthy portion of Chicken Pad Thai.
Wild Fusion doesn’t just serve Asian basics, though. In the true spirit of “fusion”, there are some inventive and unusual dishes on the menu. I’d never heard of Sticky Rice Shumai, but it turned out to be large dumplings filled with mushrooms, sausage, rice and spices. They come to you piping hot in a round, stainless steel dumpling pan and if you’re not careful, you will be full before the rest of your meal follows.
Also worth mentioning is the Wild Mango Chicken…Tender pieces of chicken breast are sautéed with green pepper and mango in a homemade mango sauce. It’s beautifully presented and tastes just as good as it looks. Our server, Brian, was friendly and attentive without hovering over our table so I also recommend the service.
One important tip: If you fancy dessert, arrive early in the evening before the good stuff runs out.
