Police Officer Marc DiNardo, 37, died July 20 following a gunfight in which four other officers were wounded and two armed robbery suspects killed.

Family friend Melissa Bartholomew said DiNardo was “a moral man” who left behind three young children and a wife, adding that his organs would be donated.

“He had a personality you’d never forget. When he walked into a room, you knew it,” Bartholomew said at a press conference.

The officer was shot twice in the face during a stakeout in which two suspects were killed in a wild gunfight at 24 Reed Street on July 16.

Officer Michael Camacho, 25, was shot in the neck and remains in critical condition. Officer Frank Molina, 35 was shot in the back, but was saved by his bulletproof vest. Port Authority Police Officer Dennis Mitchell, 35, was shot in the arm. Detective Marc Lavelle, 43, was shot in the leg.

The tragedy began after 5 a.m., when police were staking out the residence occupied by Hassian A. Hosendove, 32, a.k.a. Hassan Shakur, who was being investigated in connection with an armed robbery.

Hosendove and his wife, Amanda Anderson, 22, were confronted outside.

“(Hosendove) fired at Lavelle, who returned fire. Hosendove ran into the building. Police evacuated the building,” said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio. “They got to the apartment where Hosendove and Amanda Anderson were.”

Police identified themselves twice before attempting to gain entry. Hosendove then opened fire with a stolen, modified shotgun.

“It had a combat loader. It’s nothing but a weapon of destruction, made for one reason: to kill or seriously injure,” DeFazio said, adding that the loader adds more fire power and is legal in some states.

Officers returned fire, hitting Hosendove 19 times and Anderson once.

The public can send monetary donations to the Marc DiNardo Scholarship Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1739, Jersey City, NJ 07307.
