There is no place more distinctly American than an old-fashioned diner. Jersey City has several quality diners, but my favorite is the aptly-named Miss America on Westside Avenue.

I hadn’t been to Miss America since I moved out of the Lafayette neighborhood a few years ago, so I was worried that it might have been swallowed whole by the Recession Monster. But thankfully, it was still there…just as I remembered it. As I slid into a comfy booth in the back on a cool morning, I marveled at the shiny chrome interior walls, the homemade desserts covered in plastic wrap, and the muffins and danishes perfectly queued on the counter, waiting to be chosen. Technically, the only thing missing was a jukebox. But then again, I prefer the cacophony of lively conversation over “Great Balls of Fire” on repeat.

I’ve always thought the phrase ‘comfort food’ was a bit of a cliché but with this diner, it’s absolutely true. You can count on the eggs being just so softly scrambled, the toast being perfectly toasty with just a smear of butter and the home fries having just the right amount of crunchiness to satisfy you. Want a taste of the South? Order a side of grits…you’ll feel right at home. Mind you, all of that will only set you back about $10!

Although Miss America seems to have survived the economic storm, it wasn’t without bumps and bruises. Owner Chris Stamatis, who purchase the restaurant in 2005, said that business had dropped by 30% at one point. But the local college community and other nearby businesses have patronized him enough to keep him afloat. Mr. Stamatis said that he enjoys all the different kinds of people that come in and the various conversations he has with them. When I asked why he wanted to own a diner, as opposed to some other type of restaurant, he simply replied, “It’s for everybody.” It truly is.

I never know exactly where to eat when I'm in JC so I'm glad that I stumbled upon this article. I love a place with good grits so Miss America is definitely going on the list. Hopefully there will be more articles like this in the future!

Ms. Bailey has done a superb job of delineating a 'day in the life' portrait of the food & the culture at Miss America diner. Diner culture is as much about the food as it is the story of the woman or man on the stool next to you or your cheerful banter back and forth with the people there who make your food or serve you. If you want to see/hear a real slice of life, go grab a piece of pie and a cup of coffee at your local diner. Your life will be all the better for it.
