With her witty, politically, and socially influenced material, comedian Melissa Surach is a favorite at city venues.

She was honored by the City Council at the September 23rd meeting.

Since the August arrests of 44 individuals in a federal corruption probe that ensnared 22 Jersey City officials, Surach has said: “Who do I have to (expletive) bribe to get an award?”

Councilman Steven Fulop honored Surach for her many contributions to the arts in Jersey City, most notable being the writing program at the People’s Improv Theater, improvisation at The Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater, humor writing at Gotham, and the short comedic film “Melicious Bottomvomit.”

Decked in a tiara and seafoam green sleeveless dress showcasing multiple tattoos on her arm, Surach, 28, said she was pleased, but wanted to have Jersey Avenue renamed Melissa Surach Avenue, adding, “I would also like a bronze statue erected. It doesn’t necessarily need to be visible from space, but should at least be visible from New York.”

Surach, who majored in Mathematics, Philosophy, and Japanese, and received a professional film certificate from New York University, will perform at Babyhole Open Mic, 99 Greene St., Jersey City, on October 6th at 9 p.m.
